I hear there is a decent sized group of new Fresnans that may be experiencing their first real hit of extended Fresno heat. Well just so you know, these past few heat filled days is a little preview of how the next few months are going to play out.
Ready to leave and go back to The Bay or Los Angeles or whatever other faceless town you’re from? You will be soon. Probably.
Don’t worry, you just might get used to it. You may never ENJOY it, but you will build up some immunity to it and these past few days are good for that.
I really shouldn’t be helping you. But sometimes I like taking on the roll of ambassador; Fresno’s Dad if you will.
So here are my Fresno Heat Tips:
Really lean into the first heatwave. Do not try to avoid it in an air-conditioned building all day or leave town till it’s over. Go out in it (with proper sunblock and hydration of course). Absorb some of it. Know that you can function in it. Let that little 8mph breeze blowing on your sweaty skin, cool you.
Drink lots of water. You will want to invest in some good water bottles and have a good ice source.
Always find shade - even if the sun isn’t bothering you at that moment. And find it with grass or by a pool. Stay the hell away from blacktop and cement.
If you don’t have good AC at home or can’t afford to run it all the time, find some cool air somewhere else, to take breaks in - this is when Fashion Fair wins out over River Park.
Start the day with a cold shower and maybe take another one late in the day. It’s a really small move but I think it makes a difference. Maybe it’s a mind thing but I think it helps with your core temperature, but I really don’t know.
Ice cream is everywhere, we have many styles around town, including the most refreshing: paletas.
If it doesn’t really matter when you use your vacation time, plan trips in July or August. A nice break in the Sierras or on the coast helps get you over the heat-hump and into Fall.
Speaking of the hump, you’ll need to keep this system going until mid-to-late-September.
Good luck [snickers], you’re gonna need it.
Thanks for reading Fresno!Fresno! today.
One more thing, over on The Fresnan I posted about how a new Costco in NW Fresno would suck as bad as all the other Costcos, you can read it here.
Stay cool out there!

Hi Mike, I moved here in the winter of 2006. I had lived in North Shore prior where in August of 2005 it was 115 for 3 weeks. That’s after moving from the east coast. I moved to Fresno, saw snow in the mountains in January and thought this will be nice. Maybe even cooler than Southern California. That summer of 2006 was a record fir Fresno. We hit temps of 110-115 for 3 weeks. The news stated it was the hottest summer in over 40 years. I’m still here though.
