I Am Also Curious About Old G Sign
Why Can’t Someone Not The City of Fresno Spend Real Money Downtown!?
Hi.
From Steve Skibbie, noted Downtown Fresno enthusiast
Scaffolding beneath the old Guarantee “G”. For at least a few decades the sign used to spin in the wind, but has been leashed stationary for the last 10 years due to worn out bearings. Nobody could bear to see it tumble from its pole 🙁; but I’m curious what work is happening upthere.
Do YOU know?! I hope it’s a referbishing and not a tear down 😬🤞.
Really though, ANYTHING that could be done to update Fresno’s downtown skyline would be an improvement. It’s pretty much been the same skyline (outside of the Chuk) since I was kid. And shows no sign of changing, like, EVER!
If you time traveled 100-years (past or present) using a portal in Downtown Fresno, after you went through, you would look at the skyline and say “Wait. Did it work?”
Building up is not our thing.
Why though? San Diego’s skyline is different. L.A’s is different. San Jose’s, SF’s, Sacramento, Oakland, but not us.
I have heard it said before that it’s because our biggest industry is Ag. And Ag does not need their name on a skyscraper, nor does it reinvest much into the community it uses.
Too much of Ag’s ownership is from outside the Valley. So our local economy feeds (pun for sure intended) others more than it does Fresno.
This is all coming from talking to people on local farms and my gut.
I have zero journalistic evidence, btw. It’s just something that rings true, but I absolutely could be completely wrong.
It seems the only companies that have money to spend on buildings in Fresno are two casinos, a hospital and a local grocery store chain. And that is just naming rights money.
Pathetic when you remember we generate the most Ag product/revenue than any region on the entire fucking planet.
*end rant
Okay okay, bad vibes go away. I need something to pick me up now. I think I will go order a tri-tip sandwich from Berrok Shop and talk to you later.
✌️
