Discover more from Fresno! Fresno!
Welcome back to Fresno!Fresno! Thanks for stopping by.
The Clovis North High School band was at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I missed it but I guess it happened. Good for Clovis or whatever - band kids work hard just like the sportsball players, so props to them!
They were announced as being from Fresno (not Clovis) so this was funny:
But wait. Apparently Clovis North is in Fresno. To be exact, the Taint District (the border area of North Fresno and North Clovis).
I was completely unaware. All this time I thought Clovis North was in North Clovis. Silly Fresnan. (I don’t find myself out there very much, obviously)
See:
So then why the freaking hell is Clovis North called CLOVIS North? It’s doing the same thing Clovis West did, I guess?
Northeast Fresno suffers from such an identity crisis it needs to name all their things Clovis?!
Sorry but the name “Clovis” carries no cache with me. Fucking none. It always sounded like the name of a hillbilly cousin you only see at funerals.
At the wake, things like, “Oh dude, Cousin Clovis put on some weight, didn’t he?” or “Uh oh, Cousin Clovis found the schnapps.” would be said.
So if the name Clovis sucks, what is happening here?
Is it code? Code for “Alert! This is the CLOVIS Unified School District. You don’t need to worry about it being Fresno related!”
Is it even more dark than that? Is it code for “We have lots of white kids here because Clovis.”
Maybe a little of both?
I know what you’re thinking “Duh, Fresnan, it’s been like that foreverrrr!”
Well sorry, this is the first time I put together that it’s code. I always just felt like it was dumb and never thought more about it.
And hey, Clovis, if I am wrong about this code thing, please start naming some of your schools “Fresno East” and I might listen to you.
Warm Tummy Trend: It’s Chili Season In Fresno!
Not a big fan of Winter but one of the little things I like about chilly weather is it makes it look normal for me to order some chili at Fresno places (I have no problem eating chili in July). My favorite so far this season is Berrock Shop’s:
I will order as much as I can all season and try to report back which is best. Leave a comment if you have a local favorite that we can all find.
Is Fresno The Midcentury Modern Capital?
I feel like we sometimes under-appreciate all the midcentury modern architecture in Fresno. From the office buildings, shopping centers, homes and even schools:
That was pulled from a tweet by Darden Architects, so props to them - there are some other good shots of Ahwahnee if you haven’t seen.
I have always wondered if Fresno has a higher percentage of midcentury stuff than other cities. If feels like it anyway.
Well. Time to go. Thank you for the read. Be bummed like me there isn’t a walk night for Christmas Tree Lane again this year and hope for one next year.
Be safe!

Naming Fresno Things As Clovis Things Is Dumb
Have you ever tried the Texas Roadhouse Chili? I heard that it is made from the steak - prime rib leftovers. Every day could be different. Best because it has no beans!
Most folks don't realize that about a third of Clovis Unified is in Fresno - it goes as far west to include Pinedale. District boundaries rarely mimic any municipal boundaries. The same holds true for the Clovis Veterans Memorial District. Many Fresnans reside in its' boundaries and pay them property tax but almost all their facilities are in downtown Clovis. That's why the Calwa Parks District is not "in" Fresno although it is in Fresno.
