A good discussion thread on Fresno Reddit about the Fresno Sign and how it needs to be moved. It seems (once again) the time has come.
If that is the right thing to do, then where?
I don’t know where to put the Fresno sign, but I agree we should probably move it.
Few actually see the sign - as cool as some of the old buildings are in that section of Fresno’s OG industrial area. The sign needs to be seen. It wants to be seen. It is lonely.
I like what Bakersfield did with their version. You can see it from 99 and it feeds you to their main tourist attraction, old Buck Owens (RIP) and his Crystal Palace.
Is there a spot for that kind of thing in Fresno?
There are already a few up as you enter Downtown. They don’t match to the Fresno sign so you could switch them out.
Do you dare move it somewhere NOT downtown? Somewhere NOT Van Ness?
If you did, here would be the locations that make SOME sense to me:
Shaw (East off of 99) - folks getting off Highway 99 to go to the In & Out or Forestiere Underground Gardens or anything heading East into town, would see it.
Shaw (just East of 41) - People going to Fresno State or Fashion Fair.
Van Ness & Santa Clara - Just off 41, the first thing you see entering downtown. I think there is a generic one there now, that could be removed.
Fresno Street & G Street - Just as you exit 99 and look to downtown, there it is.
Problem is it is not big enough to go across places like Shaw - it would have to be modified, and the “Van Ness” would have to be removed.
To me it would be between Van Ness & Santa Clara or Fresno & E.
Fresno & E would look great in front of the Downtown skyline, and you could really push for people to enter Downtown off 99 via Fresno Street and make that entrance look perfect.
But the more logical choice would be Van Ness looking into downtown getting off 41. You probably wouldn’t have to change the sign, just move it.
Well, I got go with the prettier option: Fresno & G. Imagine it with this (old now but still looks kinda like this) as the background:
I like it. Let’s do it! Have your people call my people and let’s make it happen!
Thanks for reading this issue of Fresno!Fresno! - enjoy your Fresno and we’ll talk soon.
